I just got the problem as described with my OpenVPN today on my Ubuntu 15.04 installation, I have not upgraded, I've installed it from scratch.

OpenVPN has worked well now for a month since the reinstall, but today I got the problem, and now have to delete ~/.gconf/apps/nm-applet/%gconf.xml and log in again to make the OpenVPN connection work trough nm-applet.
