Just done this:
Downloaded latest microcode (3.20180312).
Replaced /lib/firmware/intel-ucode with one from the download.
Ran update-initramfs -u -k 4.13.0-38-generic
Rebooted - specifically selected 4.13.0-38-generic to reboot.
Added apparmor=0 as a boot option.
Booted.
=> All looks OK. System still up and running after 5 mins.
Rebooted to 4.13.0-38-generic without specifying apparmor=0.
=> System locks up at the "pulsing" kubuntu logo.
Rebooted back to 4.13.0-38-generic with apparmor=0 (and
fsck.mode=force) to switch back to the previous microcode on
4.13.0-38-generic.
