Interestingly, I've occasionally seen the default gnome-shell battery indicator applet show the existence of TWO batteries, one of which has 0% and the other 100% (even when on AC power). After a short while (e.g. enough restarts or access to AC), this resolves itself and I only see one battery, showing my actual amount of power.
Not sure if it is related, but I also get two batteries listed in /proc/acpi/battery even though my system only has one. I haven't seen what happens to those BAT* folders when things are on the fritz, but the contents of those files are also included at the bottom and look innocuous when things are running well.
