I have the same problem in x64 Ubuntu and Gnome.
Since 12.10 display management absolutely doesn't work for me on new user accounts.
Displays are rarely selectable and switching to some unspectacular configurations lead to graphical errors, black screen or logouts.

I use an ASUS Zenbook UX31A with DELL U2711 via HDMI.
