I'm another user affected by this with an 8800GT that has been rock solid stable in prior Ubuntu releases. I'm running the gnome shell fallback mode. The current, current-updates and x-swat repository versions all resulted in random crashes back to the login screen.
I've tried using the noveau driver instead but it increasingly loses its marbles over time. After about 8 hours of uptime it starts flickering random bits of random windows in random places on the screen, and gets progressively worse. It also hangs the X server inputs for a few seconds while doing this.
Consequently neither binary nor noveau driver provide a usable desktop.
