same thing happens on unity 12.04 3.2.0-29-generic 64bit intel i7 laptop with intel hd3000. this can't be nvidia or amd only problem.
was running firefox and cpu was doing nothing ~6%, and ram has ~50% not used. system uptime ~2days.
do note this also happens in lucid however i remeber upgrade the kernel? manualy 3.4? when this started happening usally it triagers when open firefox and force closing it then open again, don't remember if it was private browsing or not.
