This kernel log shows it:

 * initially coming up in mirrored mode, successfully
 * trying to set it to 2560x1600 and having the external monitor blank
 * then gradually stepping up the external monitor to 1920x1080 (where it works) and then 1920x1200 (where it doesn't work)
