About the issue with the Toshiba L735-101 (needing at least -B 128 otherwise the disk spins down every few seconds even with latest patches), this might be related to the fact that Linux has hard times - probably an issue with Toshiba BIOS - to find out whether the system is on AC or battery: sometimes the battery isn't displayed, the machine never goes to slip when lid is closed but can be sent to sleep forcibly by menu, the "vision" that Linux has about the AC/battery status changes once the AC adapter has been plugged then unplugged etc.

In this situation I assume that the hdparm script may not be able to determine what set of parameters it should use (AC/battery/whatever).

But I believe that even in such "limit" conditions, we should take any provisions to not use any parameters that could possibly result in a damage to the hardware. That definitely doesn't compare with saving a few milliamps for gaining a small % of battery duration on most systems "that it wouldn't break"...
