Bug Description

SRU Justification:

Impact:

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.35-21-generic

hardware HP ProBook 4510s (has HDMI)
Kernels without bug: 2.6.31
Kernels with bug 2.6.32, 2.6.33, 2.6.34, 2.6.35, 2.6.36rcx (including standard ubuntu and vanilla kernels) Ubuntu Lucid installed, and Meerkat Beta booted from USB-stick)

Bug also occurs in opensuse and fedora

Bug also occurs with KMS disabled
Driver i915
graphics Intel 4500 GMA, display 1366x768

Description of bug

Sometimes the mouse pointer or windows seem to disappear at the right side of
the screen after login or after CHVT

A print screen reveals the bug very clearly, see attachments (the mouse pointer
and nautilus are invisible, I only see the left image).

Executing xrandr (without any or with options) will cure the desktop

I attached a xorg.0 dmesg with boot parameter drm.debug=0x6.

I patched the kernel with the patch included in this report to kernel 2.6.32 and 2.6.35, this fixed the bug. I did not find any side effects.

I reported the bug at kernel.org, see https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16236

If you need further information, please let me know, but I am not a Linux
expert

Kind regards,

Otto Meijer

Fix:
Application of an upstream commit.

Test:
Apply the patch, test the kernel and see if issue is resolved.

The patch has been applied to the drm-intel-next-queue. I applied that commit and am making test kernels available at http://people.canonical.com/~bradf/lp638939. There are kernels for Natty, Oneiric and Precise. Please test the appropriate one for your system.

Dear Brad Figg,

I still use the same Probook and I installed kernel "3.0.0-18-generic #31~lp638939 SMP Fri Mar 30" This seems to be a solution to the hardware bug. Why did it so long to fix?. I found a simple work around anyway:

Adding "video=SVIDEO-1:d" to grub fixes the "bug" as well

Best regards,

O. Meijer

This bug is awaiting verification that the kernel for Oneiric in -proposed solves the problem ( 3.0.0-19.32). Please test the kernel and update this bug with the results. If the problem is solved, change the tag 'verification-needed-oneiric' to 'verification-done-oneiric'.

If verification is not done by one week from today, this fix will be dropped from the source code, and this bug will be closed.

See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how to enable and use -proposed. Thank you!
