Working with Altiris to image new Dell Optiplex 390's (using linux PE based on linux-2.6.26.7) here:

I have spent quite a bit of time troubleshooting this, and it appears that sata controller is not supported by any current linux drivers.

It's an intel ... from the XP chipset driver files:

Intel(R) 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family
2nd generation Intel(R) Core(TM) processor family

Looking at Intel's site there doesn't seem to be open source drivers for this chipset yet.
