This has obviously become a usability issue.

I respect your opinion on not doing this kernel side, Mikko, but this is something that can and should be handled transparently so that the user don't have to mess with it.

I'm going to look into doing the conversion from a zero length lower file to a proper lower file (with eCryptfs metadata).
