Some further info:

I thought I'd test out the Sound recorder program.

Almost immediately, I got these two error messages:

    Disconnected: Entity killed

    pa_stream_cork() failed: Entity killed

then, multiple messages:

    Disconnected: Entity killed

I counted 50 of them, then decided to force quit, as it seemed like they'd go on forever.

I reloaded the sound driver using the command:

   sudo alsa force-reload

and tried Sound recorder again. Exactly the same thing happened.
