When I open the sound preferences applet: USER PID ACCESS COMMAND
/dev/snd/controlC0: ja 1659 F.... pulseaudio
/dev/snd/pcmC0D0c: ja 1659 F...m pulseaudio
When I close the applet, the output to the command goes back to the first one.
I've installed some non-free codecs/plugins (for mp3 and aac files) and I've noticed that the sound hardware is slower to disappear since I did that. (Which is why I can close the applet before the sound disappears.) But it does eventually if I leave the applet open - takes a minute or two.
