Install and use "System Monitor". You will find it in System -->Administration of the Menu Bar. This program will show a real time view of processes running. It helps here if you have 2 monitors working. Every time you hit a roadblock in the installation you will notice 2 processes related to OpenOffice have re-spawned. Kill them (I believe you right-click and choose kill) and then tell installation to continue. Unfortunately this tedium lasts for at least 5 cycles or more. It seems that every patch or program restarts OpenOffice , tries to install and then says Oops - Open Office is running, Hold It ! Wait-a-Minit!
sheesh
It does the job.

$ killall soffice.bin
returned this for me each time I ran it and the update still failed.
soffice.bin(2274): Operation not permitted
soffice.bin: no process found
Any other ideas?
