I am using Kubuntu Intrepid with KNetworkManager and WiFi, on a Dell XPS M1330. I could get a static IP connection to work only with the workaround I mentioned earlier here (2008-11-12).
Now I applied the suggestion of Nick Bridgwater (2008-12-09):

I can confirm that it works without problem, keeping the static IP even through restarts.
