Thanks for investigating further! I can confirm that this workaround works for me as well. Not sure why I didn't try that before (see next paragraph).

Unfortunately this entire issue here is yet another sad example for me of a major functionality regression on desktop Linux caused by changes behind the scenes. Going through `/var/run/...` is something that has not been necessary in years with Firefox packaged in APT. And seeing that [this](https://github.com/flatpak/xdg-desktop-portal/issues/213) is already open for four years, I have a feeling we'll see a fix in 2030...

In any case, at least the path forward is clear now.
