I should add that Xubuntu does not seem to be populating xrdb on startup:

WIth ~/.Xresources customization after login:

$ xrdb -query
*customization: -color
Xft.hintstyle: hintslight

WIth ~/.Xresources customization after changing font rendering in Settings Manager/UI Preferences:

$ xrdb -query
*customization: -color
Xft.antialias: 1
Xft.hinting: 1
Xft.hintstyle: hintslight
Xft.rgba: rgb
