I've packaged the patches for focal and bionic, and posted packages to this PPA for anyone needing this feature:

As indicated by Christian in comment #11, if anyone has interest in seeing this released as an SRU update for bionic and/or focal, and have the required HW and are willing and able to test it, please speak up. Otherwise, we probably won't move forward with an SRU for this.
