I am having the same issue on a custom built:

Intel DP965LT w e6600 processor
Nvidia 8800 GTS (using the restricted driver from repos)

If I select the 2.6.24-16 kernel all is well, but the -17 just hangs and requires a reset button.

I am running 64bit.
