thanks...however, finally upgraded to hardy alpha 6 hoping this would
FINALLY fix the issue...unfortunately, still no luck...still no sound :c

still getting that BIOS BUG error after choosing ubuntu from GRUB...not sure
if this is just a sound card issue or being a gateway laptop has something
to do with it

i have a dell d620 with the same STAC92xx chip.
sound works fine in hardy with alsa and pulseaudio to

maybe you could try to switch pulseaudio or hadry and pulseaudio
