I have been looking at this problem in Answers:

The same problem has been experienced with Samba shares on Debian Etch and Fedora Core 6 servers, and I have verified it with a 8.04 'server'.

It only seems a problem when the file on the server is overwritten with Save. 'Save as' to a new file name is OK.
