Correct. I would have expected the default inotify case to handle that, though, as it will see that the contents of resolv.conf (or the symlink target) changed, and in fact it notices that, but doesn't seem to switch back to the online status.

I find it hard to test dns resolution issues in ubuntu, though, something unexpected always happens, like bug #1765477 which introduces a 5s delay and might be what is causing sssd to think even the new dns isn't working. I tested on bionic your case above.

In any case, the fixes are very localized to the bug reported here, and I believe fix them. Trying to handle the case you mentioned would introduce more regression potential, and investigating it further would add more delays. I think we should proceed with the SRU as is.
