A nicer workaround, for those using NetworkManager & systemd would be to tell sssd to try going online when an interface comes up.
Create /etc/NetworkManager/dispatcher.d/sssd_notify with the contents:
#!/bin/bash
case "$2" in
up|vpn-up) systemctl kill --signal=USR2 sssd.service; ;;
esac
Also affects Ubuntu Bionic (18.04)
