To me this seems like Gnome's inability to deal with a non-GLX display.
This is a show stopper especially for Linux thin clients.
Now on this machine I did have some 3d effects software loaded beryl and such. Maybe this is leading to certain gnome options enabled which force the behavior to crash the application.
Otherwise this vnc4server rocks! I'll have to load KDE for the time being.
