Agreed; the new version of u-boot-rpi in Eoan will drop the mkknlimg patch entirely. It also makes several other fairly major changes (splitting the boot config to deal with different configs for the 2, 3, and 4) but the classic snap gadget should shortly be updated to match those changes.
