That seems to confirm the 'regression-update' tag here. Although I wouldn't be able to debug and fix the mutter change because I can't reproduce the bug, using VMware. Mine just works :/
It sounds like good progress is being made in the kernel anyway. So I think a fix there would be preferable. Otherwise I would just be hunting for a way to cripple mutter to work around apparent VMware driver bugs.
