I have also tested the updated kernel from bionic-proposed using the VM in which the original problem was first experienced.

'uname -a' after adding bionic-proposed to /etc/apt/sources.list and doing 'sudo apt update; sudo apt upgrade'

Like Daniel, the changes incorporated into 4.15.0-55 are working for me as well.
