figured out xhost +local was not the command.

after running xhost +MyHostname

sudo synaptic
[sudo] password for tom:
No protocol specified
Unable to init server: Could not connect: Connection refused

(synaptic:5993): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: :0
