There is https://github.com/highvoltage/zram-tools project, packages are included in Debian and Ubuntu several years ago, see https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/zram-tools Maybe it's a time to abandon Ubuntu's own zram-config and instead update zram-tools package?
Another way is to include ~eugenesan improvements to zram-config, see bug #1548424 (Utilize zram built-in multi-threading, config file and /tmp mounting)
