I've found a workaround that makes the sis driver display colours correctly, in the right resolution. When I make sure the sisfb kernel module is loaded prior to X being started (for instance by adding it to /etc/modules), everything seems to work like it did in Hardy - completely fine, that is. The sisfb module isn't loaded automatically (I don't know if it was in Hardy or if it was simply not necessary for it to be loaded for the sis driver to work correctly).

So I won't have to sleep on the couch tonight after all... :-)
