I have now tried this with the Ubuntu 9.04 rc live disk:

I have attached an xorg.conf file which sets the following screen resolutions, after switching to a console and executing

  sudo service gdm restart

1024x768 (new)
800x600
640x480
512x384 (new)
400x300
320x240
