Oh, boy! You are wonderful people. :)

I downloaded the package and tried it on the laptop.

First try (just after .deb installation):
1) startx
2) the system loads just fine until I see the two white panels, black screen and mouse waiting cursor
3) the system freezes completely

Second try:
1) sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart
2) sudo startx
3) This time all I get is a black screen
4) It is possible to switch to other console ctrl+alt+f1, and then ctrl+alt+f2
5) sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart
6) I get a screen informing me that Display 0 is busy
7) GDM starting on Display 1
8) Apparently it works!
