I've found another way I can trigger the issue -- if I play a video through xine using the xvideo extension:

axa@artemis:~$ lshal -m

Start monitoring devicelist:
-------------------------------------------------

10:59:51.557: ssb__null__rfkill_b43_phy0_wlan property killswitch.state = 0 (0x0)

The physical button also controls Bluethooth, but Bluetooth is still working (and the button still switches it on and off).
