Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

I am using a AMD 64 with ASUS K8V-MX motherboard. It has onchip VIA display card (K8M890CE chipset)

When I boot into the third alpha release of Ubuntu 9.04 "Jaunty Jackalope" live cd, the computer freeze at the point of starting the x.org server. Everything locks up (cannot kill x, or switch to a terminal). I have to reset the machine.

I had the same problem with hardy 8.10 live cd.

I rebooted and select the "safe graphics mode" in the grub boot option (vesa drivers). This time it did not freeze but the display way totally unreadable with a huge lot of flickering happening. I tried to take a screenshot, but the screenshot comes up correctly.

I then change the resolution to 1024*768 in System > Preference > Screen resolution and now it works correctly. But the redraw rate is very slow and I have to wait for sometime for the application to redraw itself correctly.

Also the refresh rate is not shown at all in the Screen resolution settings. (Screenshot attached).

I have also attached the kernel log file, x.org configuration file and boot log file. I have change anything except selecting the vesa mode in the main boot option and changing the screen resolution to 1024*768

The default screen resolution is 1280*1024 (5:4) which causes a lot of flickering. I had to change it to 1024*768 and it works correctly but the redraw is still very slow. I have to wait for few seconds before the app redraws itself every time (maybe this is due to vesa drivers).

Hi pshahmumbai,

The X freeze and cursor problem was fixed in openchrome rev 707.

Build instruction I described at:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/OpenChrome

Please try to build and install, and check if it helps

Thanks for the update. It has fixed the freeze issue :)

There is one minor problem : the 2d performance is still very slow. I can see the X redraw line passing across the screen !

eg : An analogy will be like, when one is using a presentation tool and going from one slide to next - the vertical transition effect we can see.

That is how currently X is redrawing. Its really slow.

I downloaded the alpha 4 of jaunty release which was released a few days back and the bug is still present in the Live CD.

The Live CD just freeze on startup.

I think this bug is duplicate of the:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-openchrome/+bug/274340

The fix for Intrepid is not released, and I don't know if in alpha 4 of Jaunty release is package:
xserver-xorg-video-openchrome (1:0.2.903+svn713-1)

which solve freeze bug.

I think the bug with default screen resolution is 1280*1024 which causes a lot of flickering, is a Vesa bug:
