On trying to run Ubuntu 9.04, Xubuntu 9.04, and Kubuntu 9.04, Beta and RC versions from live CDs, I have these observations: The initial screen resolution is something like 1600 x 1200, but the display only shows the top left 1024x768 portion of this. This is barely acceptable in Ubuntu and Xubuntu, since the user can access the screen-resolution menu, but it's a near-disaster for Kubuntu, since the KDE menus are on the bottom of the virtual screen, out of sight, with this Averatec laptop's screen.
For those familiar with KDE, there is a GUI workaround: right-click on the screen, use the menu that pops up to create a panel at the top of the screen, right-click on that to add the KDE 'gear' start menu to that panel, then use THAT to get to the configuration dialog for setting screen resolution.
I think that a better solution would be to start with the same range of resolutions, possibly, but to set the initial resolution to a 'safe' 800x600, and let the user choose an appropriate resolution.
Another would be to have a list of initial resolutions available in the startup command line, as I've seen in at least one Ubuntu-derived distro. But I think this is best defered to the GUI.
At any rate, the current situation is not acceptible for Kubuntu, at least.
