Hello Jonas:
Thank you very much for your help. The final release still has this issue. I checked with OpenChrome people and get the answer that it might be caused by XAA/EXA issue. It can be fixed by adding the Option of "XaaNoImageWriteRect" in the Device section of Xorg.conf.

Thanks and Best Regards

Hi Bruce - Could you please be more specific when you say that the system 'hangs'?

1) When you boot and it appears to hang, can you try switching to a console using CTRL+ALT+F1?
2) If that is successful, please attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log and /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old to this bug report.

Thanks in advance

I can't tell from your last response whether the issue was resolved by adding the XaaNoImageWriteRect option to your xorg.conf. Could you please confirm whether this is (or is not) the case?

Tentatively assigning to xserver-xorg-video-openchrome for now

Hello Chris:
My solution is install the Ubuntu 8.10 from VESA mode. After that
add the XaaNoImageWriteRect in xorg.conf and remove the VESA mode. And
reboot the system and the Openchrome driver works.
