Bug Description

* Impact:
- the driver doesn't work with the X.org version in 13.10

* Test case:
- try using 13.10 on a machine needing the openchrome driver (a samsung nc20 for example

* regression potential:
- check that xorg sessions work as they should. The patches have received testing in Debian/Trusty and upstream, so presumably should be fairly safe. The number of people using openchrome is relatively small compared to the main X drivers, so the scope of risk is rather small here.

-------

I'm using a Samsung NC20 since a couple of years now. It has never been easy with X11 but with Ubuntu 13.10/saucy it has become an export issue to get this netbook running.

Notice that this is a regression from Ubuntu 13.04/raring where openchrome was worked more or less flawless.

With 13.10 however, X11 bails out and even the console is not usable afterwards.

This is an upstream report for https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-openchrome/+bug/1251849 .

The problem in Ubuntu 13.10/saucy is an incompatibility with X.org 1.14 that was fixed upstream with this commit:
http://cgit.freedesktop.org/openchrome/xf86-video-openchrome/commit/?id=17973712f083100cc041d50fca30e248846e5fd2

So openchrome versions beginning with 0.3.2 should work. You could verify this by using the original Debian sid package from here:
http://packages.debian.org/de/sid/xserver-xorg-video-openchrome

Or simply by using the openchrome package from my Ubuntu PPA:
https://launchpad.net/~bigboss77/+archive/ppa

I'll also comment regardingly in your Ubuntu bug if above fixes your Problem.

Kind regards,
  Thomas

@Thomas I tried the package is in your ppa, gives no image on the screen as if the screen turn off. The only novelty is that if you can access the TTY console.

Debian package not meet some dependencies need xorg-video-abi-15, xserver-xorg-core (>= 2:1.14.99.902).

[ 127.738] ABI class: X.Org Video Driver, version 15.0
[ 127.738] (EE) module ABI major version (15) doesn't match the server's version (14)
[ 127.738] (II) UnloadModule: "openchrome"
[ 127.738] (II) Unloading openchrome
[ 127.738] (EE) Failed to load module "openchrome" (module requirement mismatch, 0)

Dear Alberto,

from your logs, it seems that the package in my PPA at least improved the situation, and X does not crash anymore when loading the openchrome driver.

But it seems you have an additional problem to the one that was solved in the package in my PPA.
I recognized that you use a 64 Bit system, whereas I am using a 32 Bit system.
Maybe there is an additional regression affecting only 64 Bit systems?

Anyways, I think you could try compiling your own openchrome driver based on the latest upstream version and report your bug there, too. With git, you may even be able to find the commit that introduced your regression for your system.

Kind regards,
  Thomas

Ok I will try compile driver based on the latest upstream git version.

I test from a live cd, I do not have 32bit iso I will be downloading a when I can.

@bigboss Drivers work well on 32-bit system with graphics VIA VX800/VX820 for you?

Today I downloaded the iso of 14.04 beta1 will test.

@Alberto: I use a Samsung NC20 Netbook with a Via Nano Processor and the VX800 chipset. I am using it with several 32 bit Kubuntu releases since 2009. I had the regression described in this thread, that's the reason why I created and use the package in my PPA. But with that, everything runs fine for me... :-)

I think it is a problem in Xorg of saucy.

I tried the beta version 1 of "trusty" 64-bit and goes well without problems. It's a relief.

Compile the driver I install git on "Xubuntu 13.10" in one of the attempts to start the system crash xfsettingsd could get a picture on the screen. See the bug #1296449 .

I tried it on kubuntu 13.10, installing the driver deb there were no issues. So I think that the problem of the black screen is caused by the XFCE desktop environment.

Attached a patch for the package fixes this bug and bug #1165232 .

Thank you for your work. The issue is fixed in trusty with the new driver version.

Iit seems like a valid SRU candidate for saucy, but it needs SRU informations (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates), I'm adding some to the description, feel free to update same with more specific details
