7.10 installation doesn't work with MSI NX7600GT

Bug Description

When doing a fresh 7.10 installation on a computer with a MSI NX7600GT (nvidia 7600GT) with an HDMI connected monitor, as soon as the live cd boots up into the "dash", graphics is corrupted (ubuntu logo during kernel boot looks ok). Trying to boot into safe mode, or manually setting vga resolution doesn't change this behaviour.

Taking out the 7600GT, inserting a nvidia 6200LE, installing ubuntu 7.10, enabling the nvidia non-free driver (everything working properly), then removing the 6200LE and inserting the 7600GT works, so it seems this could be a problem with the X server that the installer chooses for the 7600GT.

Sorry, instead of HDMI I meant that the monitor was connected using DVI.

The card does have an HDMI port though, but it works just like a DVI port.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at [WWW] https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. I have classified this bug as a bug in update-manager.

Can you check and see if this is still an issue on Hardy alpha?

I tried two different 7600GT based cards, the ASUS one with 2xDVI works ok, the MSI one with 1xDVI and 1xHDMI does not (looks the same as with 7.10)

Everything looks ok in the installer (the livecd I guess it should be called) until X is started, then the graphics is garbled.

I have made a youtube video of the video startup (at the start black screen when I just killed the X server by ctrl-alt-backspace) just to indicate what kind of garbleness it is. It can be seen at <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LoKyth4pdK8>

I should also add, that on 7.10 the ubuntu splash screen displayed during boot is garbled on the hdmi card, this is not the case in 8.04a3 where it works just fine.

Hi swmike,

Thanks for the video. The swapping out of 7600GT for 6200LE and back sort of sounds like a HW initialization issue, but I'm not sure.

In any case, it sounds like this is something to report upstream, which we can do for you, but first could you provide the PCI ID's for all of the video cards you've tested (you can find this via running `lspci | grep -i vga` with each card loaded.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

I just verified that the problem still occurs with 8.10 alpha 4,looks like identical problem.

swmike (ubuntu-s-plass) wrote :

I just installed alpha4 again, and if I choose safe mode the installation screen is all garbled but not garbled enough so that I can't get thru the complete install. After reboot, X boots properly and I get a 1280x1024 screen that is not garbled, but is not the correct resolution either.

So it seems the alpha4 installer in safe mode does things that subsequently installed X doesn't do (or the other way around).

Sorry, when I say "not the correct resolution", I have a 1920x1200 monitor and I only get 1280x1024 on it.

After doing dist-upgrade and rebooting again with 2.6.27 kernel, I get the identical garbled graphics as in the installer.

If I then install nvidia proprietary driver 177 I get good graphics and acceleration is working.

OK, can you please include the information requested at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DebuggingXAutoconfiguration as separate attachments (step 5). After you include that stuff I will slightly modify the title and description of the bug and finish the triage on it so that a developer can begin work. Thank you.

Couldn't get anything working (went into failsafe mode in 800x600) when doing "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" so I ran it with an empty xorg.conf instead. Hope it helps.

Thank you for reporting this issue about xserver-xorg-video-nv. Starting
with Lucid, Ubuntu is transitioning to using the -nouveau video driver
by default instead of -nv. The reason for this change is because
upstream development for the -nv driver has been quite slow. We are
quite pleased with the upstream development speed for -nouveau, and hope
this will translate into swifter bug fixes as well.

Because of this, I'm closing this bug report at this time. I'm marking
it wontfix because what you describe is probably a valid issue, but we
do not have further plans to work on it in Ubuntu. If you would still like
to see this issue investigated, I would encourage you to file it
upstream at http://bugs.freedesktop.org/.
