I also have had random crashes on my Ubuntu 12.04 32bit machine, seems to only happen when running a movie with movieplayer, with VLC or when google earth is in use... no other situations seem to reproduce the crash in which the screen goes totally scrambled, no keyboard or mouse control... as stated before only a hard shutown by holding the power button will effect the crash.
