FWIW, I've got a Dell Monitor and bug #1020221
is reporting this issue on a ThinkPad, so I don't think it's exclusively an Apple-hardware problem. You might be correct that it's a somewhat unusual setup.

I'm happy to help out, but I am a total novice when it comes to kernel debugging. Let me know if there's anything I can contribute.
