Same thing happened to me on a fresh Fedora 17 install using Nouveau on a NV50 card. Not sure the precise branding on the card as it came pre-installed on a Dell Optiplex 980.

Was just running the default Fedora 17 desktop with two screens. Was mousing over on the secondary screen on a remote X11 browser window when the mouse stopped moving. After much thrashing, I was able to get it to move a little bit on screen, then nothing. I logged in to the box over ssh and tried killing the Gnome Shell, followed by the Gnome Display manager, followed by the Xorg server itself, but the screen remained frozen.

Will attach excerpt from /var/log/messages showing crash behavior and kernel dmesg at subsequent boot.
