Then I logged in as root, told yum to erase xorg-x11-drv-nouveau (which also removed an xorg-x11-drivers package). (I think I didn't do this last time!)
Then I installed xorg-x11-drv-nvidia and kmod-nvidia from RPM Fusion's "NonFree" REPO. My PC booted up fine, but withouth Plymouth startup (will have to tweak the grub.conf to fix that) but I have been watching videos all afternoon with no more crashes.
And as a bonus, with the proprietary drive, glxgears runs much faster!
So unless you are a purist and WANT to use the noveau driver, I suggest migrating to the proprietary one.
