I added GdmXserverTimeout=20 in /etc/gdm/gdm-custom.conf under the [daemon] section and that fixed the problem. Thanks. The machine has 333MHz Pentium II CPU by the way. GDM could state more explicitly that my hardware is too slow, if it is not meant to be supported ;)
