The cross cursor on rasterized grey background means X by itself is working fine, this is the default background, and there are no X clients running.
Can you try stopping X (or booting with "text") and then run "xinit" from the command line? It should give you a barebone X session with an xterm window. If you get so far, run for instance "xrandr" or "glxinfo" in that window and see if it makes X crash.
