Well, in the meantime I did create a new bug report for the freezes with xserver-xorg-video-intel-lts-quantal and Intel Sandy Bridge on Ubuntu 12.04:

I did re-use this bug as those Sandy Bridge i915 drm hangs & system freezes do feel pretty similar to this bug and there was just about the same bug on Ubuntu 11.10...
