When my system freezes the mouse and everything else is unresponsive - I can't even get to a console. Also any music or video that is completely playing stops as well i.e. a complete freeze

I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 on a Dell Studio 1555 laptop with ATI Radeon graphics (flgrx driver)
