My machine also freezes completely, no mouse or keyboard response, but only in unity.
it freezes mostly in firefox (klick on tab or link), but also in ubuntu software-center or chromium-browser (rare).

important:
unity-2d works fine!
I can browse the web in unity-2d without any freezes.
I can play openarena (0.8.5-10) in unity-2d for hours without any freezes.
so maybe its compiz or unity 3D related?

machine specs:
os: ubuntu 12.04 , 64bit
cpu + gpu: Intel i5-3570K CPU
mainboard: Gigabyte Z77M-D3H (F6 BIOS)
