I had the same symptons of bug 1 as described in post #432 on my asrock 330 ION, ubuntu 12.04 playing flash in chrome.
I upgraded the nvidia driver from the ppa channel to version 302.17:
ii nvidia-current 302.17-0ubuntu1~precise~xup2 NVIDIA binary Xorg driver, kernel module and VDPAU library
ii nvidia-settings 302.17-0ubuntu1~precise~xup3 Tool of configuring the NVIDIA graphics driver
xbmc@mediacenter:~$ nvidia-smi -q -u

Timestamp : Sun Aug 19 00:41:11 2012
Driver Version : 302.17
HIC Info : N/A
Attached Units : 0
I upgraded to the latest stable kernel 3.2.0-29 (no additional tweaking):
xbmc@mediacenter:~$ uname -a
Linux mediacenter 3.2.0-29-generic #46-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jul 27 17:04:05 UTC 2012 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
And I did not have any freeze any more.
I installed the nvidia driver from the ppa channel as described here:
