I tried compiling the kernel from kernel.org, version 3.3.5, it took a while but it also freezed completely (machine completely unresponsive, no mouse or ping or ctrl+alt+f1 out of it) same as with ubuntu stock kernel.
I am including my syslog of the whole evening with the two different kernels (ubuntu, kernel.org 3.3.5, but since the freeze is sudden never gets anything substantial logged).
