I have tried to downgrade the driver to maverick version. This did not solve the problem. My new suspicion is that this is a compiz bug. also reflected here https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/723002.

I will try to disable compiz and see what happens. Will report back later.
